The biggest names in music and comedy. Black ties. Sharp suits. Designer dresses. Celebrity chefs’ pop-up restaurants. Champagne sipped beside the Thames. An armada of pleasure boats. Dance. Street theatre. Art, sculpture and roving eccentrica. Fireworks. And more fireworks. Late night parties.
The Thames Traditional Boat Rally
The Thames Traditional Boat Rally, is, simply put, a huge 2 day display of the very very finest looking traditional boats one can see. It was the dream, back in 1977, of a few keen boaters. Most of these were members of the River Thames Society, others were members of the Inland Waterways Association or Thames boat clubs. Their idea was to encourage owners of traditional craft to cherish and restore them to all their former glory, as well as to continue to use them upon the river. The Rally was to be both a meeting and showcase for owners and craft, at one of the most beautiful spots on the River Thames, with various trophies and prizes awarded. Happily, it is still going, and becomes more spectacular every year.
The Henley and District Agricultural Association
The Henley and District Agricultural Association is said to produce the best one day agricultural show, held on the second Saturday in September each year. InJuly there are the challenging sheepdog trials and in October The Ploughing March with modern, vintage and heavy horses all displaying their skills. The Henley Literary Festival
Towards the end of September Henley holds its literary festival. Fascinating authors speak to you from the stage of the Kenton; on board a boat on the river, surrounded by the timbers of an old barn and there is always something to aumuse everyone.
